Skin

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

The human form is changing during this time. We need to rethink skin as a material. Skin is the layer of usually soft, flexible outer tissue covering the body of a vertebrate animal, with three main functions: protection, regulation, and sensation. The origin of word skin is from dutch word which means flay, peel. Which inspires me to peel skin from human and look at it.

The main factor which changes perception of human skin is public surveillance. Surveillance is the monitoring of behavior, activities, or information for the purpose of information gathering, influencing, managing or directing. Tracking takes on new layers slowly. It goes under the skin.

Now the government wants to know the temperature of your finger and the blood-pressure under its skin. Yuval Noah Harari

Skin as a material becomes important as a safety net too. If it could make surveillance more democratic? So as I designer I have a question, how skin could look in the future? How we can redesign it?
